2004 - TagLive Keywords: TagLive, Tagged Objects, Physical vs. Virtual, Public vs. Private, Fusedspace TagLive is a project what 2Hatch developed in cooperation with Leidi Haaijer for the online competition Fusedspace. TagLive is about the tagging of objects in real physical life. Physical tags point to information in the virtual world. By tagging objects physically they become handles to the virtual world that is containing the specificly attached information. The tagged object The tags contain a unique number which always point to a unique piece of information. When the user possesses the unique code of that tag, (s)he has access to all information connected to that particular object. With this unique number the user can add his/her information or story to the 'information-space' of that object. Without the unique code the user only has access to the last added piece of information (i.e. the whole 'information-history of the object' is not available) and that person can't add information. Physical versus virtual In the past mainly humans told stories; now stories are detached from man and become attached to objects. Connecting objects to information enables stronger relationships between the physical world we live in and the virtual world of stories, fantasy, information and knowledge. This also allows us to integrate virtual data in our lives in new ways and to use it differently. Retrieving the virtual information attached to the objects, from a database, can be done by using different kinds of interfaces: website, e-mail, by sending sms-messages and receiving information, reading a teletext-page, broadcasts on radio & tv, or by watching video walls in public spaces and perhaps, in the future, directly by brain implant. Private versus public TagLIVE is a way to put pieces of private information and stories together that can be made publicly available. Tagged information can become private again when users consume it and copy it for personal use. Information can shove away in regard with the object or even be attached to objects that no longer exist. Because of this a topical question in the information society of today is: how true (= real, truthful) is the offered information. ^Projects index |

2002
- Blocks-project Keywords: Tangible User Interface, Interactive Surface, Building Blocks, Multi User Application, Input Device, Multi Touch, Object Recognition, Play, Educational Toys, Childeren, SchoolTV 3D-games are nowadays the most regular games in the industry. To navigate through a 3D-world is for the kids of today no longer a special experience, the can often design their own attributes or levels into a 3D-game. Unfortunately the level design apps they can use for that are usually very technical and complex to work with. This known fact was the reason to start it graduation project BLOCKS. Joris Ketelaar, Jeroen Kouwe and I graduate with this project in Augustus 2002 at the European Media Masters of Art’s (EMMA) course of the Utrecht School of Art (HKU). The goal of this project was to create a new type of input-device/interface that makes it easily for users to make levels and attributes for a 3D-game. The result of the project is a 3D-level builder named ‘BUILD-IT’ that works with a tangible user interface like LEGO_Blocks to create levels and makes the mouse and keyboard needless. More information and pictures about the BLOCKS project you can find alongside in the BLOCK.pdf document (in Dutch). ^Projects index |

2002
- Vsign-project Keywords: Innovative Software Package, 3D Animations, Sign Language, Vsign Builder, Vsign Player, EuroPrix TTA, EMMA Vsign is my groupsproject at the European Media Masters of Art’s (EMMA) course of the Utrecht School of Art (HKU). This project started with a question out of the business; actually research company Pragma had two questions: - A spiffy and funny website about the deaf community in the Netherlands? The result is the site ‘Maak een gebaar’. - Make fifteen animations in Dutch sign language? The result is the Vsign Builder and Vsign Player. Because the different interesting and disciplinary of the group we decide to split the group. So after changing the scope of the project into; developing a software package that can be used to create and play 3D animations of sign language. Jeroen Kouwe and I work on that part of the project and the rest of the group on the website. In the past, signs could only be stored for later use by coding them with symbolic notation system, or by making drawings, photographs, or more recently: videorecordings. Video is the only format that does full justice to the dynamic character of signs, but video-files are large and inefficient for use on the internet or for dictionaries on CD-ROM. The Vsign Builder was developed to create an effective, affordable and attractive alternative: 3D movies that can be stored as tiny data packages. You can create and view these signs on your computer. When you are creating an animation of a sign, or when you are viewing earlier made signs, you can zoom in on the signer or zoom out, view the sign from different perspectives, and adjust the signing speed. Pragma will use the Vsign software to develop an electronic sign language dictionary for the MultiReader project. However, we think that many others in the Netherlands and internationally will be interested in the Vsign Builder and Vsign Player, because the software can not only be used for sign language dictionaries, but also for sign language courses, sign language research, ect. ect. That’s why we have setup a website (www.vsign.nl) and I place alongside the links to download the Vsign software: so that everyone who is involved in sign language activities, can use the Vsign software. For free. We have only three conditions: - You may use the Vsign software for personal use only, or for educational or research purposes. - You may not sell the signs that you make with the Vsign Builder. - We would really appreciate it if you let us know what you think of the Vsign software and send us the Vsigns that you’ve built with the software. We would like to continue the development of the Vsign Builder and Player, and to develop the Vsign Composer. The Vsign Composer will let you combine Vsigns into animated sign language sentences and texts. If you want to participate in any way in the further development of the Vsign software, please contact me. ^Projecten index |

The assignment was to provide better self-help for older people. With Joris Ketelaar and Floris van der Elshout we came up with many concepts like online-bingo or a virtual confession chair but finally we did go for a digital journey planner for the bus the “Diloc” (DigitalDesk). Before we started to design the Diloc we did research on how older people now planning their journeys with the bus. The results of the research are the starting point for or designs. The end result of this seminar was a 3D prototype of the Diloc and a cd-rom with the research results, photo’s and a 3D instruction video on it. ^Projecten index |
